A main arm of fundraising these days is celebrity-studded events, often attainable by silent auction at a charity golf tournament or the like.
In the case of the Sports Museum led by Rusty Sullivan and curated by the hockey (and sports in general) historians and authors Richard Johnson and Brian Codagnone, The Tradition annually celebrates the careers and community impact of sports legends including but not limited to Boston greats.
Each year, a former Bruin, Celtic, Patriot and Red Sox are feted with a short interview traditionally hosted by Tom Caron with help from the likes of Jackie MacMullan and, last year, longtime WCVB Channel 5 news anchor Maria Stephanos.
For the past several years, I have enjoyed the honor of writing up the article on the Bruins Hockey Legacy honoree for the event program.
Here is the press release on this year’s event. It includes a walk around the TD Garden floor (ice covered but parquet not in use) with food stations from fine Boston-area chefs and bars at either end of the rink, a row of silent-auction memorabilia and many opportunities to say hello to people you recognize including famous ones. It’s a pretty cool experience if you’ve got the $400 to donate to the cause. The Sports Museum takes the money and uses it for its urban-youth programs with a large focus on the prevention of bullying.
